Protect Your Smile with Fluoride Treatment

We offer fluoride treatment to prevent tooth decay for our patients. Fluoride helps by making teeth more resistant to the build-up of decay causing plaque and sugars. It can also speed re-mineralization as well as disrupt acid erosion in teeth.

According to the ADA, fluoride intake is often recommended for infants and children between the ages of 6 months and 16 years. During this time, primary and permanent teeth are developing.

In addition to receiving fluoride treatment at our dental office, it can be applied to the teeth through fluoridated toothpastes and mouth rinses. Mouth rinses containing fluoride in lower strengths are available over-the-counter. However, stronger mouth rinses can be prescribed.

Exploring the Protective Role of Fluoride for Teeth

Before teeth emerge, fluoride ingested from various sources strengthens tooth enamel, fortifying it against decay—a process known as "systemic" benefit.

After eruption, fluoride aids in enamel remineralization, reversing initial decay signs. Application of fluoride toothpaste or professional treatments imparts a "topical" benefit.

At Berwyn Dental Connection, we advocate professional fluoride therapy, especially for high caries risk patients. Our commitment to affordable preventive care ensures access to these vital treatments, including fluoride varnish application, custom trays, or prescription-strength toothpaste.

Reasons for Fluoride Treatments

There are several reasons why fluoride treatments might be necessary. Firstly, individuals who are more prone to tooth decay, particularly children and teenagers who may not adhere to proper oral hygiene practices, can greatly benefit from these treatments. Additionally, for others, fluoride treatments serve as a supplemental method to reinforce tooth strength in conjunction with their home oral care routine.

Who Qualifies for Fluoride Treatments?

With a thorough examination, we can assess whether fluoride treatments are suitable for your dental needs. For children visiting our practice, we often suggest fluoride treatments to maintain optimal oral health. In reality, many of our patients, regardless of age, can reap the benefits of these treatments. The frequency of treatments can be tailored to individual needs, ensuring the best possible dental care.

What to Expect During Fluoride Treatments

During your fluoride treatment, you'll relax in our comfortable dental chair as we clean your teeth to prepare for the application. Next, a liquid fluoride solution is carefully brushed onto your teeth. Afterward, we'll provide instructions for post-treatment care. Typically, patients should refrain from eating or drinking for thirty minutes to allow the fluoride to fully penetrate the teeth. You can schedule fluoride treatments as often as needed, with some patients opting for treatment at every cleaning or checkup to maintain their smile's protection.
